Sara’s Cookies
Based on the left-handed slant of the writing on the card, I'll guess that this Sara's Cookies recipe card came from long time neighbour Sara H. Simple list of ingredients, I bet these are pretty yummy!
Ingredients
- 1 cup shortening
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
Method
- Cream together shortening & sugar.
- Separate egg and reserve egg white for later. Add egg YOLK only to sugar mixture.
- Add flour & cinnamon and mix.
- Divide batter in half. Press one half of the batter onto a (ungreased) cookie sheet, patting until it's even. Pat and press second half of batter onto second cookie sheet.
- In a bowl, beat reamaining egg white until foamy (not too stiff) and brush the dough/batter with the egg whites.
- Add 1-2 tsp. water (spread mixture with hands.)
- Sprinkle with nuts.
- Bake 30 minutes at 300°F
- Cut into squares while warm.
Recipe Notes
I'm not clear about whether you add the water to the egg whites and then spread that over the cookie batter. Or, do I brush with egg whites then sprinkle/spread the water around with my hands? Guess I'll have to go and ask Mrs. H!
**update--it's been confirmed that the water is used to thin out the egg whites for spreading, but it isn't necessary. If you feel it makes it easier to spread the egg whites around, then go ahead and add the water.
Also, her son says he often substitutes sprinkles for the nuts on top.
Seems like a pretty flexible recipe!
