Bits & Bites ( Nuts & Bolts )
Vanita had several versions of this recipe in her card box, but this was the one that, when we arrived at Christmas, if it wasn't ready yet, she'd hand over this card and tell me to finish making it. It's noted as being from Joyce.
Ingredients
- 2 pkg (envelopes) HIdden Valley Dressing Mix ((dry)*)
- 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil ((canola))
- 3 Tbsp dill weed**
- 2 bags Bits & Bites™ (the snack mix)
- 2 bags Bugles™
- 2 cups peanuts
- 2 bags pretzels ((straight))
- 2 cups Cheerios™
- 2 cups Shreddies™
Method
- Put the cereals, snack mixes and nuts in a large container with a lid (ice cream pail - 4L.)
- Pour the Hidden Valley dry mix, oil and dill weed over top of the dry mixture in the pail/bowl.
- Shake and turn daily*** until the dressing mix is all absorbed into the dry ingredients.
Recipe Notes

The recipe card says * regular or dill can be used for the Hidden Valley mix. There's also a note ** that says use 2 Tbsp of dill if you're cutting the recipe in half.
My note ***if we turned up at Christmas and this wasn't made, Vanita had me throw this stuff in the oven on a cookie sheet (at 300°F for 20-30 mins, stirring half way), then it was allowed to cool on the counter and was then stored in an ice cream pail. And to answer your question: I don't know how many days this process takes. The card doesn't say. It was very often already done and ready to eat when we arrived. I think it keeps pretty well in that old ice cream pail, but it didn't usually last much past the holiday.
